Delivery Optimization is a Windows Update feature that allows client computers to download windows updates from peers on their network.
Microsoft introduced this feature to reduce the number of network resources required to distribute updates to numerous users without affecting their bandwidth for other services.
Delivery Optimization helps reduce the number of network resources required to deploy updates by redistributing large windows update files among multiple devices on similar networks.
These could harm your internet speed by constantly uploading large update files to peers on your local network and the internet.
To check if delivery optimization is running, navigate to the task manager and search for the feature among the applications consuming the most bandwidth.
There are multiple ways of disabling delivery optimization:
Navigate to the windows setting and click the Updates and security tab.
Select delivery optimization from the side menu, then toggle the button to activate or deactivate the feature.
To enable a metered connection, navigate to windows settings and select the network and internet tab.
Always create a system restore point before updating the registry so that you can roll back any unwanted changes.
To edit the registry, we use the registry editor. Type Regedit on the search tab on your taskbar and select the registry editor app.
On the right side menu of the registry editor, navigate to the path: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DoSvc
On the right tab, click on the start-key to modify the registry.
Update the value data from 2 to 3 and click ok to save the new settings, and restart your computer.
To confirm that delivery optimization is disabled, navigate to the task manager and search for the feature among the applications consuming the most bandwidth.
